Lessons 

The Kamloops Symphony Music School offers private lessons and group lessons for students at all levels and ages. Students may take lessons for enjoyment, to prepare for the Royal Conservatory examinations, to prepare for university exams or to hone professional skills. All our students develop invaluable transferable skills that will benefit them in all areas of life.

Private Lessons

Kamloops Symphony Music School is proud to offer a variety of instruments for all ages and ability levels. Private lessons are offered in 30, 45 and 60 minute lesson lengths on a weekly or bi-weekly basis during the school year. Private lessons are available during the day, after school, evenings and Saturdays depending on the teacher's availability.

Group Lessons

Theory Club Classes

Instructor: Deborah Miles

Beginner Theory - 30 minutes
Preparatory Class – Step by step learning with fun activities, we explore the keyboard, landmark notes, patterns and begin to learn note values.

Elementary Theory – 45 minutes
Levels 1, 3 and 4 – Pitch and Notation, Rhythm and Meter, Intervals, Scales, Chords, Music Terms and Signs, Melody Writing and Composition, Music History. These are the concepts and exercises that we practice and play games to form the foundation for the building blocks of music.

Intermediate Theory – 45 minutes
Levels 5, 6 – Helps students to prepare for nationally recognized theory exams. Circle of Fifths, Scale Degree Names, Simple and Compound Time, Chord Symbols, Transposition.By using write on every page workbooks, listening and playing activities the students reinforce and recall their musical knowledge with accuracy.

Advanced Theory – 60 minutes
Level 8 – The final study of music rudiments before continuing to the study of Harmony and History in Level 9. Writing Chords, Cadences, Functional Chord Symbols and Root/Quality Chord Symbols, Hybrid Meter, Melody and Composition, Form and Analysis, Music History. The students are well prepared to write their Level 8 RCM theory exams. This class is the way to score success!

There is a separate fee for the exam paid to the RCM.

KSMS fee does not include books needed for the class. Books can be purchased at Long and McQuade. Books required are ULTIMATE MUSIC THEORY and ULTIMATE MUSIC THEORY SUPPLEMENTAL.

Stringendo Junior String Orchestra

Instructor: Cvetozar Vutev
Day: Monday
Time: 6:00pm

This program allows students to expand their technical abilities and performance skills. Students will learn the basics of the ensemble and orchestra playing and performing, as well as orchestra conducting.

Each year the Stringendo Junior String Orchestra has a variety of performance opportunities throughout the community.

The prerequisite for taking this class is at least 3 years of individual experience on a string instrument, violin, viola, cello or double bass (minimum Level 2 RCM).

Cello Ensemble

Instructor: Martin Kratky
Day: Saturday
Time: 4:00 pm

This class will bring together up to 10 cellists in an exciting ensemble. There will be 19 rehearsals throughout the year, two performances: a half-program at Christmas, and a full-program in late May or early June. 

The fee to join the cello ensemble is $150 for KSMS students, and includes music.

Chamber Music

Instructor: Cvetozar Vutev
Day & Time: Each group will determine their lesson schedule with Cvetozar after registering.

Chamber Music group classes are open for students with at least 5 years of experience on their instruments (Level 5 RCM). Students can play any instrument – strings, winds, brass, piano, etc. – and groups will be created based on students' age and level of experience.

Group Suzuki Violin (French)

Instructor: Annette Dominik
Day: Monday
Time: 4:30pm - 5:00pm

This is a french speaking group Suzuki Violin class. This class will be beginner level for ages 4-9.

Beginner Flute Class

Instructor: Cathy Dochstader
Day: Tuesday
Time: 4:30 - 5:15 pm

Small group lessons for beginning flute students age 8 and up, combining traditional and Suzuki methods. Parent participation is welcome, but not mandatory. This class will run from November 6, 2018 to December 11, 2018 and concludes with a class performance. Each class is 45 minutes long.

The fee is $100, which includes music.

Christmas Flute Choir

Instructor: Cathy Dochstader
Day: Saturday
Time: 9:15 - 10:00 am

The KSMS flute choir is open to students with at least 1 year of previous playing experience. Rehearsals will run from November 17 to December 8, 2018, culminating in a Christmas concert. Each rehearsal is 45 minutes long.

The fee is $65 for current KSMS students, and $75 for non-KSMS students.
